Fred Chaney has been involved with Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders and their issues for sixty years variously as a student, lawyer, politician, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, National Native Title Tribunal Member, as a citizen, and in NGOs relevant to reconciliation, native title and education.
He served on the board of Reconciliation Australia for 15 years and was its first non-Indigenous Co-Chair and is currently on the Board of Reconciliation WA.
He believes everyone has a role in reconciliation and that a key role of reconciliation agencies is to encourage the widest possible engagement and participation across the Australian community.
He believes that the Uluru Statement from the Heart provides the agenda for national reconciliation and agrees that reconciliation requires more than words.
